Topic: Big things in small packages: Nanotechnology in Taiwan
Speaker: Dr. Ping-ping Tsai
Senior Researcher and Program Manager
ITRI (Industrial Technology Research Institute)
Nano Technology Research Center (NTRC)
Description:

Nanotechnology is the science of working at scales of less than 1000 nanometers - a scale where materials and machines are composed of individual molecules. Nanotechnology promises we will build machines in which we control the placement of each atom, allowing us to fabricate any material we can imagine within the laws of science at low cost of energy and resources.

Slated as one of Taiwan's big three research priorities, nanotechnology holds great promise in supporting a variety of industries. It is estimated that production involving the application of nanotechnology may reach US$3 billion dollars within five years locally. For high tech industries, nanotechnology means enhancing already powerful technologies such as DVD's - allowing them to store tens of thousands of times more information. For traditional industries, nanotechnology brings technologies which will add value to products which are facing tough competition at the cost of production level. More importantly, the nanotechnology initiative is researching innovative applications which may come to market in both the near term (three to five years) and the long term.

Dr. Ping-ping Tsai is a Senior Researcher and Program Manager at the Industrial Technology Research Institute's Nanotechnology Research Center. As one of the focal points of nanotech research in Taiwan, Dr. Tsai's center is helping create the applications that will help traditional industries compete in the near future and also assisting high tech firms in mapping out key strategies for the next few decades. In addition, ITRI is helping Taiwan build an environment that will enhance investment and identify Taiwan's niche in this exciting industry.

Dr. Tsai will introduce nanotechnology, its applications and its development here in Taiwan. Pointing out how it differs from other "hot" technologies, such as biotechnology, Dr. Tsai will show what this technology may mean for your business both today and tomorrow.
