The Future of Taiwan's Biotechnology Industry

Description: In the wake of announcements describing large investments flowing into research and business development as well the formation of strategic links with a diversity of organizations, the Technology Committee has invited Dr. Sunney Chan to update us on the status and outlook of Taiwan's Biotech Industry.

Dr. Chan was appointed Vice President of Academia Sinica in August of 2000. He has led a tremendously successful career as a research scholar and leader of institutes and departments. His outstanding achievements have won him many prestigious honors. He has served on the Medical Biotechnology Action Committee of Academia Sinica, Board of Directors at Caltech, Chair of the Scientific Committee of Botaniclab, Director of the Institute of Chemistry at Academia Sinica, and Associate Editor of the Journal of the American Chemical Society.

Dr. Chan will encourage American business leaders in Taiwan to participate and invest in Taiwan's biotechnology initiative. During this presentation you will learn about Taiwan's "bio-tech cluster" concept where government funding is used to aggregate researchers and resources. Dr. Chan will explain how U.S. firms can contribute to greater coordination and cooperation in research and development and will describe how joint initiatives between businesses, academic institutions and research organizations underlies success in the Taiwan biotechnology industry.
